Courthouse Square – Fort Stockton, Texas

Taking time to visit Fort Stockton will give you an opportunity to see some of the classic old buildings that make this community stand out.  There is the courthouse that was constructed in 1883, the first Catholic Church which was built in 1875, a schoolhouse that was built in 1883, and Zero Stone placed by survey party in 1859, used as origin point for all land surveys in this part of West Texas.  Not on the square but nearby is the St. Stephens Episcopalian Church which was constructed in 1872 and was the first Protestant Church west of the Pecos River.

While you are in Fort Stockton you should take a little while and go see Historic Fort Stockton.  This typical frontier military post was established 1858 as Camp Stockton and abandoned in 1886.  The fort consisted of 35 buildings made of adobe and hand-hewn limestone.   Of the 35 buildings originally there just 4 remain.  Of these three are officer’s quarters and guardhouse with jailer’s quarters, three solitary confinement cells, and a larger holding sell.  Some of the other buildings are reconstructed.
