Museum of the Big Bend – Alpine, Texas

Museum of the Big Bend

Come to the museum and see an overview of the geologic, climatologic, geographic, biologic, historic, folkloric and artistic elements that make the Big Bend a unique region of North America.  The museum tells a story of the people who contributed to making the Big Bend what it is today and pointing the way to the future of the region.

It is located in the building that it originally occupied at the Sol Ross State University that was built in 1937.  It was moved around over the years but is now back where it “belongs.

The Museum of the Big Bend has been collecting and exhibiting artifacts of the vast Big Bend region for more than 70 years.  With the collection being as expansive as it is it offers a wonderful opportunity to capture the human history that reflects contributions of the Native Americans, the Spanish, the Mexicans and the Anglo-Americans. Showcasing these four distinct cultures which emerged and shaped the history and heritage of the Big Bend region that have been inhabited for more than 11,000 years is the goal of the Museum.

If you are interested in the history of the frontier of Texas this museum will enable you to get a feel for what the pioneers endured as well as the life of the Native American inhabitants that had lived there for many years prior to the coming of the settlers from the East.
