Sitting on 367 acres the 120 buildings that make up the University of Texas is a gem in the city of Austin.  It is one of the largest public universities in the United States, founded in 1883.  Currently there are approximately 21,000 faculty and staff, 16 colleges and schools and almost 50,000 students.  There are satellite campuses and research centers across Texas, including the J.J. Pickle Research Campus, the Marine Science Institute, the McDonald Observatory, the Montopolis Research Center and the Brackenridge tract.

The graduate school is one of the largest graduate schools in the nation.  The bachelor’s degrees are awarded annually in more than 170 fields of study and 100 majors.

The college is part of the Big 12 Conference and has claimed more titles in men’s and women’s sports than any other school since the league began in 1996.  Bevo, a Texas longhorn, has been the school’s mascot since 1916. 

The Blanton museum of Art at the university is located on the U of T campus.  Galleries feature contemporary Latin American, Renaissance and Western Art.  Open Tues, Wed, Fri. and Saturday from 10 – 5, on Thursday from 10 – 8 and Sunday from 1 – 5.  Closed on Monday.  Located at MLK Blvd. at Congress Ave.  There is an admission charge everyday except Thursday.  Phone: 512-471-7324.

Harry Ransom Center is one of the world’s finest cultural archives and is the host to a rare Gutenberg Bible, printed in 1455.  There are 30 million literary manuscripts, one million rare books, five million photographs and more than 100,000 works of art at the center.  Open Tues, Wes, Fri. from 10 – 5; Thurs. 10 – 7; Sat – Sunday noon – 5.  Located at 21st and Guadalupe.  Free admission.  Phone: 512-471-8944.

Texas Memorial Museum is a natural history museum of Texas.  This museum has fossil remains for the largest flying creature ever found, a Pterosaur, with a wingspan of more than 40 feet that lived in Texas 65 million years ago.  There are also gems and minerals and other fossils and meteorites.  Open Mon – Fri 9 – 5; Sat. 10 – 5 and Sun.  1 – 5.  Closed major holidays.  Admission is Free at the museum located at 2400 Trinity St.  Phone: 512-471-1604.

UT Tower – Lookout over the city from the top of the University of Texas famous landmark.  Tours are available through reservations, usually a week in advance.  Location: University of Texas Campus (you can’t miss it).  Phone: 512-475-6633
