Athey Nature Area and Historic Hiller House – Victoria, Texas

The historic Hiller house was built by German immigrants to Victoria in about 1857, making it one of the oldest standing farm homes in Texas. The home is the offices of Keep Victoria Beautiful and is available as a public meeting place and rental venue for corporate and private events. Inside the Hiller house is the Hiller Family Museum with furnishings and memorabilia from the late 1800\’s home. Come and visit!

The Hiller House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The house was built by German immigrants, Friedrich and Margaretha Beck Hiller in 1852 when they arrived in Texas. The house is also a Registered Historic Texas Landmark.

A living history re-enactment, held the second Sunday in October, portrays the family’s story as well as educates people about the area’s German culture. Visitors are welcome at the house 7 days a week. The historic Hiller house is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. to noon and by appointment at other times.

The Athey Nature Area is a 10 acre urban park, part of the City of Victoria Riverside Park System. On the southwest side of the Hiller house is the nature deck where stories of the Athey Nature area are displayed as well as activities for students grades K-12. Information on species in the Athey as well as trail maps are also available. Walking trails range from paved to primitive. Sun and mosquito protection recommended.

In the adjacent Riverside Park are other amenities including a children’s playground, picnic areas, Frisbee golf, hiking/biking/walking trails, paddling trails, Riverside Golf Course and the Texas Zoo.
