Lake Nasworthy and other Attractions – San Angelo, Texas

Miss Hatties.jpgLake Nasworthy and other Attractions – San Angelo, Texas

San Angelo has history, recreation and attractions to keep you enjoying the time you spend in this community.  There is Lake Nasworthy which is a 1,596 acre municipal lake where you can swim, boat or fish.

There is also the downtown historic district where you can browse through the stores and learn about the history of the community.  While outside take a look at the historic murals that are across from the Santa Fe depot which depict the early days of transportation.  The dates of the scenes are from the 1840s to 1940s.  They are 85 ft long and 14 feet high.  Welcome to Texas where everything is bigger and better!

The Orient-Santa Fe Depot, where the Railway Museum of San Angelo is housed, is an operating diorama depicting the city in 1928 as well as static displays of railcars.  The depot is open Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm.  703 S. Chadbourne St. If you want to see it on a day when they aren’t open you can call 325-944-1815 and see if you can arrange for a tour.

There is also Miss Hattie’s Museum for you to see while there.  Here is a restored "ladies of the evening" saloon/"parlor house" that was a surreptitious landmark for decades.  Everyone knew where it was (and what it was).  It has been restored with original furnishings and fashions to depict living in the style of those ladies that entertained soldiers, ranchers and cowboys in their very special manner.  The house operated from the mid 1800s until the Texas Rangers closed it down in 1946.  You can visit the museum for free on Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10 – 4 at 18 E.Conco, San Angelo, Texas 76903 .  Phone for the museum is 325-653-0112.
